| Welcome to CHURCH of the EPIPHANY An Episcopal Church 55 George Street |
Epiphany sits at the end of George Street in Allendale, which puts it about 200 feet behind the Lee Library and Allendale City Offices on West Crescent Avenue. While one can walk to the church from the library, George Street off Hillside Avenue takes you directly into the Church parking lot. Episcopal Church signs at the intersections close to the church will direct you down George Street.
Top of the PageEpiphany has about 50 active families making it a small, warm, nurturing environment for young and old. The high quality of the public schools in the communities around Allendale attracts families with school age children to this area, and the Epiphany congregation reflects that fact. Programs for families and children play a major role in the life of Epiphany. Community and commitment characterize the central elements of life at the church.
The Reverend Briggett Keith leads Epiphany in its close, supportive community life. Briggett entered the ministry from a career in elementary education and continues to view the education of children as an important aspect of her ministry. She has great strength in pastoral care believing that Christ calls the Church of the Epiphany to love and care for all Gods children individually and as a community through worship, witness, works, education, and fellowship.
Holy Eucharist starts at 10:30am on Sunday morning (9:30am during the summer months). A Coffee Hour follows the 10:30am service. The church provides infant and child care during the Holy Eucharist. Church School for all ages starts at 9:15am on Sunday morning. We also offer an informal service on Saturdays at 5:00pm. Please telephone the church to check on services during the week and other special events.
Epiphany has put a great deal of effort into its programs for children. A dedicated group of adults meet each week with small classes and present a scriptural based curriculum filled with age appropriate activity and fun. A great deal of love goes into the program. Church School also includes a Sunday morning adult class usually taught by the rector and designed to give more mature minds something to chew. The adults also have some fun. Intergenerational activities take place during the Church School year to mark special days on the church calendar. Special evening educational programs and retreats occur as well.
Epiphany has two active musical groups:
EP, designed for children, meets frequently during the school year, usually on Wednesdays after school for drama practice, choir practice, and a snack. The group performs during services of worship several times each year.
CC, an adult choir, rehearses on Thursdays from 7:45 p.m. to 9:15p.m. and sings at the worship service almost every Sunday from September through May.
Persons interested in participating in either of these choirs as either choristers or instrumentalists are invited to call David Messer (Minister of Music) at 201-587-2168 for more information and a warm invitation to join.
Epiphany dedicates a considerable portion of its congregational talents and resources to ministries outside its walls. The Church actively supports the Bergen County Center for Food Action, the "Angel Tree Program," the Eagles Nest Camp, the Inter-religious Fellowship, St. Pauls Shelter and Pantry, and the Crop Walk. Epiphany publishes and distributes an Allendale directory called "Heres Allendale" as a service to the community.
An Episcopal congregation has existed in the fabric of Allendale since before the turn of the century. A Sunday school meeting in a village home in 1872 seeded the creation of Epiphany. The Bishop of Newark dedicated the first church, the Chapel in the Willows, in 1876. The mission grew rapidly in pace with the growth of Allendale in the years following World War II and in 1958 achieved parish status. Epiphanys current building, its fourth site since its beginning, provides an attractive, yet informal setting for worship, growth, and celebration of Christs gifts of life in Allendale.
Epiphany welcomes everyone to its worship and special events. We have available a short video for visitors to take with them to learn more about the people and programs at Epiphany. The members of Epiphany sincerely hope you will want to call Epiphany your church.
